Some journeys show you a country. Others change the way you see it.

Over two days, you will discover the Netherlands through its traditional ceramics, antique objects, historic markets and museum collections - not as isolated attractions, but as part of a living cultural landscape.

From the birthplace of Delftware to the historic towns of Friesland, this journey reveals how objects tell stories of trade, craftsmanship, daily life and the changing tastes of European society. Along the way, ceramics become more than beautiful objects, it also becomes a way of understanding history.

This experience combines places that are rarely explored together: Delft's antiques and curiosities market, Royal Delft, one of Europe's finest ceramics museums, and a private collection normally closed to the public.

More importantly, it offers something that cannot be found in a guidebook.

Day One: Delft

Morning

We begin the day over coffee in the historic centre of Delft. Before setting out, we explore the story of Delftware, the influence of Chinese porcelain on Europe, and how collectors, dealers and museums look at historic ceramics.

Delft Antiques Market

Our first destination is Delft's renowned antiques market.
Together we examine ceramics, discuss makers' marks, compare craftsmanship and quality, and learn how to recognise the difference between an attractive object and one with lasting historical, artistic or collecting value.

Lunch

Lunch at a local café, with time to share discoveries and purchases and exchange impressions from the market.

Afternoon

A boat journey through Delft's canals brings us to Royal Delft, offering a unique perspective on the city before we step inside the last remaining Delftware factory founded during the Dutch Golden Age.
Here we follow the making of Delftware from clay to the final cobalt-blue decoration and discover how a craft established in 1653 continues to evolve while preserving centuries of tradition.

Evening

Dinner at a local restaurant.
Evening in the private salon of one of the world's leading Delftware specialists.Surrounded by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century masterpieces, ceramics recovered from historic shipwrecks and exceptional collector's pieces, we spend the evening in conversation over a glass of wine, exploring the stories, discoveries and traditions that shape the world of ceramics and collecting.

Day Two: Leeuwarden

Morning

We travel north by train to Leeuwarden, the historic capital of Friesland—a region with its own language, traditions and distinctive ceramic heritage.

After coffee in the old town, we visit the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, home to one of Europe's most important collections of European and Asian ceramics.

Museum & Historic City

As we move through the museum, the themes of the previous day come together. We compare European, Chinese and Delft ceramics, recognise stylistic influences and discover how centuries of artistic exchange shaped ceramic traditions across Europe.
Afterwards, we explore historic Leeuwarden on foot, discovering Frisian culture, the legacy of Makkum pottery and the stories preserved in the city's streets, architecture and everyday objects.

Farewell
By the end of the journey, you will have gained more than an introduction to Dutch ceramics. You will leave with a deeper understanding of the Netherlands through its objects, craftsmanship and material culture. 

Accommodation is not included. I will be happy to recommend hotels in Delft or Leeuwarden.
